The first Met Opera radio network broadcast would not be heard until 1931

Today in 1910, the second of two experimental radio broadcasts were transmitted from the Metropolitan Opera house, marking the first public radio broadcasts ever transmitted in radio history. Starring in the title role of Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, Enrico Caruso could reportedly be heard as far away as Newark, New Jersey. The first Met Opera radio network broadcast would not be heard until 1931.



The incomparable Enrico Caruso sang Canio a record 116 times with the Met but only appeared as Turiddu six times. Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci is on stage this season at the Met through February 1.
