"GLORIA" - Presentation Copy to Enrico Caruso.

Holiday 2013 Catalog, Lot 16. [Caruso, Enrico. (1873-1921)] Cilea, Francesco. (1866 - 1950) . "GLORIA" - Presentation Copy to Enrico Caruso. The libretto by Artur Colautti, based on a play by Vitorien Sardou. [8], 263 pp. 4to. 22.5 x 29.5 cm (9 x 11.5 inches). Later full red morocco, spine lettered in gilt, previous owner's name in gilt on front cover, all edges gilt, original wrappers bound in; matching full red morocco slipcase. Presentation inscription from the composer to tenor Enrico Caruso on the half title. From the collection of Jane Hohfeld Galante (1924 - 2010), pianist and music scholar. Caruso created roles in many of Cilea's operas but was not among the cast of this production. 'Gloria' was Cilea's final opera, opening at La Scala on April 15, 1907 conducted by Arturo Toscanini, and was a box office disaster, closing after only two performances. Perhaps the composer hoped that getting the score into Caruso's capable hands might somehow spark some further interest
